New book reveals the secrets from Inside the Westminster Menswear Archive

The Westminster Menswear Archive, founded in 2016 by Professor Andrew Groves, has been an invaluable resource for fashion students and professionals alike. Now, its extensive collection of menswear spanning the last 275 years is showcased in the newly released book, Inside the Westminster Menswear Archive.

Published by Bloomsbury, it features over 140 key garments from the archive, each meticulously photographed in close-up detail and accompanied by insightful curator commentary. This visually stunning book aims to inspire a new generation of designers by providing a comprehensive look at the evolution of menswear.

The book highlights significant pieces from a wide array of designers and brands, such as A-COLD-WALL*, Ahluwalia, Aitor Throup Studio, Alexander McQueen, Belstaff, Bernhard Willhelm, Burberry, Casely-Hayford, C.P. Company, Carol Christian Poell, Comme des Garçons, Craig Green, Dior Men, Fred Perry, Helmut Lang, Hussein Chalayan, Jean Paul Gaultier, Junya Watanabe, Louis Vuitton, Martine Rose, Meadham Kirchhoff, Nigel Cabourn, Paul Smith, Prada, Stone Island, Umbro, Undercover, Vexed Generation, and Vollebak.

Unlocking the Secrets of Menswear: The Role of Archives in Design ON 6-6 7.30 TO 10 PM – SEVENSTORE LIVERPOOL

To celebrate the publication of Inside the Westminster Menswear Archive, SEVENSTORE in Liverpool will host a panel discussion in collaboration with Dazed magazine, featuring co-authors Professor Andrew Groves and Dr Danielle Sprecher, as well as designers Aitor Throup and Robyn Lynch, editor Thomas Gorton, and Dazed’s fashion writer Elliot Hoste.

The panel will discuss the significance of the Westminster Menswear Archive, and the role of archives in general, delving into the significance of archives in their work and revealing how these rich sources of inspiration can lead to innovative menswear outcomes.

Unlocking the Secrets of Menswear: The Role of Archives in Design ON 11-6 6.30 PM – WATERSTONES PICCADILLY

On Tuesday, 11th June Waterstones Piccadilly will be hosting an exclusive ‘In Conversation’ event to celebrate the release of the book, “Inside the Westminster Menswear Archive.” The venue was previously home to Simpsons of Piccadilly, who are featured in the book’s sportswear section.

Delve deep into the world of the Westminster Menswear Archive with Professor Andrew Groves and Dr Danielle Sprecher In Conversation with journalist Mark C. O’Flaherty. The event will explore how this unique archive was established and its groundbreaking, non-hierarchical approach to collecting. Where a Lidl trainer is next to a Louis Vuitton leather jacket.

Discover how designers from fashion houses around the world draw inspiration from the archive. It is a treasure trove of unlikely yet influential garments that are shaping the future of the fashion industry.
