National Museum and The Seweryn Udziela Ethnography Museum

KRAKÓW, POLAND

ABOUT THE COLLECTION:

The Hutsuls were people who inhabited the area by the Prut and Cheremosh rivers in the eastern Carpathians, now in western Ukraine. In the 19th century, their wonderful traditional art attracted the attention of artists and intelligence, mostly associated with Lviv, who were inspired by vernacular culture. It resulted in extraordinary works of art, mainly paintings, showing the Carpathian landscape and the everyday life of the Hutsuls. Their outfits, made of homespun linen and sheepskin, were sophisticatedly decorated  with hand embroidery. The Hutsuls loved the beautifully crafted in-house jewelry and leather and brass accessories. The largest collection of their art is preserved at the Ethnographic Museum of Seweryn Udziela, but the National Museum in Krakow also has a significant representation of Hutsul traditional craftsmanship.
